And there is evidence that they can.

For example, clinical studies have reported increases in NAD+ or related measures following supplementation with NR or NMN. A 2024 analysis of an NMN clinical trial found a dose-dependent increase in blood NAD+ concentrations in adults receiving 300, 600 or 900 mg of NMN for 60 days.

But here's the important distinction:

Increasing NAD+ is not the same as proving an anti-aging benefit.

A 2025 review in Nature Metabolism concluded that human evidence remains limited and that effects vary by tissue and intervention. The authors noted that many preclinical findings have not yet translated into clear benefits in human clinical trials.

That's exactly why we think the conversation should be approached carefully.

NR and NMN are scientifically interesting.

But they are not magic pills, and we don't yet have enough evidence to say that increasing NAD+ will make humans live longer.

For consumers considering an NAD+ precursor, factors worth considering include:

  • Third-party testing
  • The quality of the available human research

What About Direct NAD+ Supplements?

You may also see products marketed as “NAD+ supplements.”

The biology is more complicated than simply putting NAD+ into a capsule and assuming it will directly raise NAD+ throughout the body.

NAD+ metabolism involves multiple synthesis, salvage, transport and degradation pathways, and researchers are still working to understand how different NAD+ precursors behave across different tissues.

That's one reason much of the current research has focused on NAD+ precursors rather than simply taking NAD+ itself.

The field is evolving quickly, and future research may give us a much clearer picture of which approaches are most useful, and for whom.
